Recall Date:
03/05/2026

NHTSA ID: 26V129

Mfr. Campaign Number: N262544420

Manufacturer: General Motors, LLC

Components: ENGINE CONTROL MODULE / FUEL SYSTEM SOFTWARE

Potential Number of Units Affected: ~11,787

GM Vehicles Affected and What This Recall Means

General Motors has issued a safety recall affecting certain 2025–2026 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 heavy-duty trucks equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tank systems.

The issue involves the vehicle’s engine control module (ECM) software, which manages fuel transfer between the truck’s secondary and primary fuel tanks. Under certain conditions, incorrect software calibration may trigger diagnostic trouble codes during normal fuel transfer operations.

If these codes are set, the system may disable fuel transfer from the secondary tank to the primary tank until the vehicle is restarted. However, the fuel gauge may continue to display the combined fuel level from both tanks, even though fuel in the rear tank is temporarily unavailable to the engine.

If the primary tank runs low while the transfer system is disabled, the vehicle could stall unexpectedly while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall only affects heavy-duty gasoline models with dual fuel tanks (RPO codes L8T and N2N) and does not apply to diesel-powered trucks or models with a single fuel tank configuration.

What Drivers Need to Know

General Motors will update the engine control module software to correct the calibration issue.

Owners may be able to receive the update over-the-air (OTA) if their vehicle is configured to accept wireless software updates. Alternatively, the repair can be performed at a GM dealership at no cost to the owner.

Dealer notifications began March 5, 2026, and owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing April 20, 2026.

Drivers can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN on the GM owner portal or by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup tool provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

GM’s Recall History

GM identified the issue after a systems engineer noticed an unusually high frequency of diagnostic trouble codes appearing on certain heavy-duty trucks equipped with dual fuel tank systems in October 2025.

Further investigation revealed that the engine control module could incorrectly flag a fault during normal fuel transfer operations. When these diagnostic codes are triggered, the system temporarily blocks additional fuel transfers between tanks, which can create a discrepancy between the fuel gauge reading and the amount of fuel actually available to the engine.

Field data analysis identified 20 potentially related reports of vehicles stalling while driving between February 2025 and January 2026. GM reported no known crashes or injuries associated with the issue before issuing the recall.

Software-related recalls have become increasingly common as modern trucks rely more heavily on integrated electronic control systems to manage engine performance, diagnostics, and fuel management. We break down all major OEM recalls every quarter via our quarterly recall report.
