Subaru Vehicles Affected and What This Recall Means

Subaru of America has announced a safety recall for certain 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid and 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid vehicles.

The issue involves the fuel filler cap sealing system. Under certain conditions, specifically when the fuel tank is close to full and the vehicle experiences a significant rise in ambient temperature, fuel expansion inside the tank can increase pressure. This pressure may push fuel up through the filler neck.

If the seal between the fuel filler cap housing and gasket is insufficient, fuel may leak from the filler area. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.

Subaru’s investigation determined the condition is related to insufficient sealing performance in the filler cap gasket, which may not adequately contain pressure when fuel expands in warmer conditions.

What Drivers Need to Know

Subaru dealers will replace the fuel filler cap gasket with an improved version that incorporates an O-ring for enhanced sealing. The repair will be performed at no cost to owners.

Until replacement parts are available, Subaru recommends affected drivers limit their fuel level to approximately 50% of tank capacity as a precaution.

Dealer notifications began February 16, 2026, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning March 25, 2026.

Drivers can confirm whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN on Subaru’s website or by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall lookup tool from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Subaru’s Recall History

Subaru identified the issue after receiving a technical report from the U.S. market in December 2025 describing fuel leaks originating near the filler cap. Engineers were able to replicate the condition during internal testing shortly afterward. You can see a full breakdown of all of the major manufacturers in our latest quarterly recall report.

Further analysis of returned parts confirmed that fuel expansion combined with increased tank pressure could allow gasoline to escape past the filler cap seal when the tank is nearly full and exposed to higher temperatures.

Before announcing the recall, Subaru documented 33 technical reports related to the condition in the U.S., though the company reported no fires, injuries, or accidents associated with the issue.

With hybrid models continuing to expand across Subaru’s lineup, quality and component validation for new powertrain platforms remain an important focus for manufacturers as vehicles transition toward electrified architectures.
