Written by BizzyCar | Apr 8, 2026 5:00:00 PM

Recall Date:
3/25/2026

NHTSA ID: 26V185

MFr. Campaign Number: 90Z5

Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

Affected Components: Instrument Cluster Basic 8" (Software)

Units Affected: ~75,323

Which Volkswagen Vehicles are Affected?

The recall covers two 2025 Volkswagen models, both assembled at Volkswagen de Mexico and affected by the same instrument cluster software error originating from a supplier error at Visteon.

The 2025 Volkswagen Taos accounts for 36,242 units, produced between November 6, 2024, and June 20, 2025. The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta accounts for 39,081 units, produced between September 23, 2024, and July 1, 2025. All 75,323 vehicles in the population are estimated to carry the defect. Volkswagen corrected the production condition in calendar week 33 of 2025 with software version 7860.

What Drivers Need to Know

The defect is a software error in the instrument cluster's Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) initialization process. When the ignition is switched on, the cluster reads startup data from NVM. If that data is incorrect or corrupted, the software discards it and falls back to default configuration values. The problem is that neither the instrument cluster nor the immobilizer system are designed to operate correctly on those default values. The result is an instrument cluster that fails to function at startup.

When the cluster fails, it cannot display vehicle speed, engine RPM, gear and mode indicators, or warning telltales. Driving without that information increases crash risk, particularly in situations where a warning telltale would have alerted the driver to a separate vehicle condition. The failure is noticeable immediately at startup, which is the one reliable aspect of this defect. A driver who sees a blank or non-functional cluster at ignition should not drive the vehicle.

The remedy is a software update to the instrument cluster. If the update is not sufficient, Volkswagen dealers will replace the cluster entirely. Both are free of charge. Since affected vehicles are within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, no separate reimbursement plan is offered. Dealers were notified on March 27, 2026. Owner notification is scheduled for May 22, 2026.

Volkswagen Recall Background

Volkswagen first identified claims related to this condition in October 2024. Initial technical analysis in February 2025 showed that affected vehicles would not start when the cluster failed, so the issue was categorized as a quality concern rather than a safety defect. For most of 2025, it was addressed through normal software development channels.

The classification changed in early 2026. As claim volume grew, the issue was escalated to the Pre-Product Safety Committee on February 5, 2026. During that review, a second failure mode was identified: in rare cases, vehicles could remain start-capable even after the cluster failed. That meant a driver could start and operate the vehicle with a completely non-functional instrument panel. On February 16, 2026, that second failure mode was confirmed. By March 18, 2026, the Product Safety Committee formally determined a noncompliance with FMVSS 101 and approved a recall.

How BizzyCar Can Help

With 75,323 vehicles across two high-volume models and owner notification not arriving until late May, Volkswagen dealers have a clear window to act. The Taos and Jetta are among VW's most popular U.S. models, which means the affected population is well-represented in most VW dealer customer databases.

BizzyCar's Recall Outreach product identifies open recall vehicles in a dealer's customer base and initiates automated two-way SMS outreach. Owners get notified with their recall status and the ability to schedule service immediately, without waiting on a mail campaign. Book a Demo
