The airbag control unit (ACU) detects crash signals and commands deployment of the airbags and seat belt pretensioners. Under certain driving conditions, data can become corrupted while the ACU writes to its memory. When that happens, the airbag warning light comes on, and the airbag system deactivates. A deactivated system does not deploy the airbags in a crash, which raises the risk of injury to occupants.
Hyundai traced the cause to a system reboot or power interruption that hits while the ACU is mid-write. Supplier ZF could not reproduce the fault on a vehicle but could induce it on the bench.
The warning sign is an illuminated airbag light. Any owner who sees it should call a Hyundai dealer rather than wait for the recall letter.
The fix is a software update to the ACU, installed by a Hyundai dealer at no cost. That holds whether or not the vehicle is still covered by Hyundai's New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The updated software preserves the last known valid data if a data transfer is interrupted. Owners who already paid out of pocket to fix the condition qualify for reimbursement under the plan Hyundai filed with NHTSA on March 2, 2026. The report does not list a Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory.
VINs became searchable on November 6, 2026. Hyundai will notify dealers electronically and owners by certified mail by January 1, 2027. Owners can check a VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
Hyundai's North America Safety Office opened this investigation on August 19, 2024, after spotting an increase in airbag warning light warranty claims. Five ACUs recovered from North American vehicles went to ZF for analysis between September and December 2024. Through 2025 and into 2026, Hyundai Motor Company and ZF ran technical reviews, electrical stress testing across an expanded voltage range, and repeated vehicle-level replication tests.
On September 18, 2026, Hyundai Motor Company advised the safety office that other vehicle applications could carry the same ACU driver software, and the review widened to more models and model years. Hyundai's North America Safety Decision Authority approved the recall on October 22, 2026. At that point Hyundai had logged 331 unique incidents between October 3, 2019, and September 24, 2026, and no crashes, fires, or injuries in the U.S. The affected vehicles are no longer in production.
This follows Hyundai recalls earlier this year for the Tucson instrument cluster in June and the Kona rear center seat belt buckle in July. For the full recall data on the quarter, see our Q3 2026 automotive recall report.
This recall covers vehicles that are three to seven years old. Many of them have moved out of the dealer's regular service rotation, and the fix is free regardless of warranty status. That is a clear reason for a dealer to call. Owner letters do not go out until January 1, 2027, so VINs searchable now give dealers about eight weeks of lead time.
