Which Chevrolet and GMC vehicles are affected?
The recall covers 2025 and 2026 model year full-size vans. Both were built between January 21, 2025, and June 1, 2026. GM used manufacturing records, part trace data, and vehicle service records to set the population.
| Model | Model Years | Units Potentially Involved |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Express | 2025 | 5,434 |
| Chevrolet Express | 2026 | 3,259 |
| GMC Savana | 2025 | 3,568 |
| GMC Savana | 2026 | 454 |
Vans with a recorded non-suspect steering gear serial number, or a completed steering gear replacement under the earlier recall (26V399), are excluded. That leaves vans that were inspected and did not receive a new steering gear, plus vans inspected with no steering gear serial number recorded on the repair order.
The affected steering gear assemblies have a nut that was not properly tightened. A malfunctioning part sensor at the supplier allowed some assemblies to pass without the nut meeting specifications. If that nut separates from the assembly while the van is moving, the driver can lose steering control, which raises the risk of a crash. The June inspection criteria left out 108 suspect serial numbers that were believed to have been contained at the supplier, and this recall closes that gap.
Drivers may notice degraded steering precision, or a steering wheel that sits off-center when driving straight. Either symptom calls for a service visit.
The remedy is an inspection followed by a replacement when needed. The dealer checks the steering gear serial number against the expanded suspect list and replaces the assembly on a match. Vans without a matching serial number are closed after inspection. The replacement gears have nuts torqued to specification. The report does not list a Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory.
Every covered van is under warranty, so the repair is free and GM is not offering reimbursement. Dealers were notified on October 29, 2026, and VINs became searchable that day. Owner letters are scheduled to start mailing on December 14, 2026. Owners can check a VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
GM recalled these vans in June 2026 under 26V399, and dealers inspected for 51 suspect steering gear serial numbers provided by the supplier. On September 28, 2026, a GM brand quality manager filed a report through GM's Speak Up for Safety program after a dealer found a loose nut on a 2025 Express that had already been inspected and closed under that recall. GM opened a product investigation on October 6, matched the van's serial number to the supplier's disposition list, and found 108 serial numbers that had been incorrectly omitted.
GM revised the 26V399 service bulletin (N262563570) on October 8 to add those serial numbers. The investigation also turned up two potentially related warranty claims on vans previously closed under 26V399, with repairs completed on July 9 and July 20, 2026. GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the condition. GM's Safety Field Action Decision Authority approved this recall on October 22, 16 days after the investigation opened.
The supplier contained the problem on May 29, 2026, and vans built after June 1, 2026 have properly torqued steering gear nuts. Because 26V718 is a separate campaign with its own VIN lookup, vans that showed a completed recall in June show an open recall again. Dealers have a head start on this one. VINs have been searchable since October 29, and owner letters do not mail until mid-December, which leaves about six weeks before most owners hear from GM. Express and Savana vans are workhorses for commercial fleets, so a single account can hold several affected vans.
BizzyCar Recall Outreach finds vehicles with open recalls and schedules service automatically through two-way SMS. Dealers can identify every affected Express and Savana in their database now, reach owners before the letters arrive, and book the steering gear inspection.
