What drivers need to know

On affected trucks, the eyelet crimp on the left-hand tailgate cable may be loose and separate. If a heavy load, such as a utility terrain vehicle, is driven onto the tailgate, the right-hand cable may not be able to carry it alone. The tailgate can then drop onto the rear bumper and may strike the person loading. There are no dashboard warnings for this condition.

The remedy is free. Ford will notify owners by mail, and dealers will replace the left-hand tailgate cable with one that meets load rating specifications.

Ford recall background

On June 13, 2026, workers at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant saw left-hand tailgate cables separating under test loading. The supplier traced the problem to a broken crimping die during two shifts on May 26, 2026, and confirmed only left-side cables were affected. Ford issued a stop ship on June 15, 2026, and approved the recall on October 13, 2026. As of October 19, 2026, Ford is aware of zero warranty claims and zero field reports, and has no reports of accidents or injuries.
