Which Toyota vehicles are affected?

The recall covers 2022-2026 Toyota Sienna Hybrid vehicles built between September 16, 2021 and July 20, 2026. Only vehicles with certain recliner assemblies from a specific supplier, in seats with a certain seat belt pretensioner, are involved. Toyota can’t estimate how many will actually have the defect; the “1%” in the NHTSA report is a placeholder meaning “unknown.”

What drivers need to know

Each second-row seat has an integrated seat belt with a pretensioner that tightens the belt in certain high-speed frontal crashes. Under a specific combination of crash pulse, seat back movement, and pretensioner timing, the load can cause the outboard recliner to disengage from its locked position. A seat back that isn’t locked may fail to restrain occupants properly, increasing the risk of injury.

The remedy is free. For most vehicles, Toyota is developing updated software for the SRS control unit that governs the pretensioner. For about 200 2022-2025 Sienna Hybrids with the Mobility as a Service package, both second-row seat backs will be replaced with ones using a different recliner. Toyota plans to notify owners between December 7 and December 21, 2026.

Toyota recall background

Toyota began investigating after prototype sled tests in 2025 showed a recliner disengaging. Further sled and vehicle crash testing through October 2026 identified the conditions behind it, and on October 14, 2026, Toyota decided to conduct a recall. The seat frames are made by Toyota Boshoku Indiana. Toyota reports no field technical reports or warranty claims from US sources related to this condition.
