The recall covers a single model line, and it is one of the highest-volume nameplates on the road:
Affected vehicles were built between August 15, 2024 and June 9, 2026. The population is defined by the hardware, specifically a 7-inch combination meter carrying software from one supplier, Visteon Corporation, under part numbers 83800-AQ020 and 83800-AQ021. Other Toyota and Lexus vehicles use a combination meter without the affected software and are not part of this campaign. Toyota lists the estimated percentage with the defect at 100 percent, because every vehicle in the population carries that software. The condition itself occurs randomly at startup, so the number of owners who actually see it will be far smaller than the number who are technically exposed to it.
The failure is a software initialization error rather than a hardware fault. At startup, the meter can fail to complete its boot sequence and come up blank. Because that same module controls more than the display, the loss cascades. The driver cannot read telltales and indicators, which removes the warnings a driver depends on to catch a developing problem. Other road users cannot see turn signals or hazard lights, which removes the vehicle from the conversation at every intersection, lane change, and roadside stop. Occupants lose the seat belt reminder, and unbelted occupants face a higher risk of injury in a crash. Toyota cites noncompliance with FMVSS 101 and FMVSS 108, along with paragraphs of FMVSS 114 and FMVSS 208.
The fix is a software update to the combination meter, performed free of charge, and it requires a trip to the dealer. Toyota is notifying all known owners to return their vehicles to a Toyota dealership rather than pushing the update over the air. That distinction matters. This is a half-million-vehicle software campaign that lands entirely in the service drive.
The campaign does not carry a Do Not Drive or a Park Outside advisory. Owners who experience a blank cluster can restart the vehicle, but a restart is not a repair, and drivers who have seen the condition once should schedule the update rather than wait for it to happen again in traffic. Because owner letters go out well within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, Toyota notes that involved owners would have received the repair at no cost under warranty regardless.
Dealers were notified on August 6, 2026. Owner notifications are phased between September 21 and October 5, 2026. Owners can confirm whether a specific vehicle is included by entering the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.
This investigation took two years, and the reason is that the failure would not repeat on command. Reports of a blank 7-inch meter at startup began arriving in July 2024. Toyota recovered parts from the field and sent them to the supplier, which could not replicate the condition. From October 2025, Toyota and Visteon worked through additional reports and began to suspect a software initialization problem, then built special equipment capable of pulling detailed data from vehicles that had actually experienced it. That data let the supplier reproduce a similar blank meter on the bench.
Bench testing alone was not enough. From April 2026 the supplier ran power cycle testing on the meter with no occurrences. In June 2026 the work moved to a complete vehicle, and in late July 2026 Toyota and the supplier finally induced the software initialization fault on a real car, confirming both the blank meter and the loss of turn signal, hazard, and buzzer function. Toyota made the noncompliance determination on July 31, 2026.
The scale is the story for dealers. A single model line, 508,354 units, and a repair that cannot be delivered remotely. Camry Hybrid volume is concentrated in Toyota stores that already run full service schedules, and these are recent vehicles still tied to the selling dealer. Every one of them has a reason to come back.
