Which Toyota vehicles are affected?

The campaign covers one nameplate in two powertrain configurations:


Both configurations were built between January 2, 2024 and November 25, 2024, and Toyota notes that not every truck built in that window was sold in the United States. The population is defined by hardware rather than by build date alone. Only trucks equipped with certain shock absorbers from Thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, specifically assemblies where the external reservoir is attached by a flange of a certain length, are involved. The part numbers are 48510-AK042 and 48510-AK032 for the front assemblies and 48530-AK030 and 48530-AK020 for the rear. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicle sold in the United States uses these shock absorbers.

Toyota entered 1 percent as the estimated percentage with the defect, and the filing explains why that number should not be read at face value. Toyota cannot estimate how many trucks will actually develop the condition, because it depends on how much rock chipping and road salt a given truck sees over its life. The NHTSA portal requires an integer, so Toyota entered 1 to represent unknown and said so in the report.

The failure sequence is specific. Untreated metal surfaces between the flange, the reservoir, and the shock absorber body corrode as moisture works in. The corrosion buildup creates an expansive force on the welds securing the reservoir, the welds can fail, and oil can leak from the assembly. In some cases the reservoir detaches entirely. Toyota's dynamic testing confirmed two outcomes when that happens. The driver experiences reduced suspension damping, and the detached reservoir becomes a road hazard for everyone behind the truck.

What drivers need to know

The fix requires a dealer visit and covers all involved vehicles. Toyota is notifying all known owners to bring the truck to a Toyota dealer, where the technician will inspect the front and rear shock absorber assemblies and replace the affected assemblies with improved ones at no cost. This is a parts and labor repair, and it cannot be handled remotely.

The campaign does not carry a Do Not Drive or a Park Outside advisory. The filing lists no warning that can occur, but there is a visible symptom worth knowing: oil leaking from a shock absorber is the first stage of the same failure that ends in detachment. An owner who notices fluid on or below a shock should schedule the inspection rather than wait for the letter.

Dealers were notified on August 6, 2026. Owner notification is phased between September 21 and October 5, 2026. Toyota is using its general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid to have the work done. Owners can confirm whether a specific truck is included by entering the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.

Toyota recall background

The investigation started with two complaints and ran eleven months. In September 2025, Toyota received two allegations of a leaking shock absorber. Toyota inspected one of the trucks at the dealership and found the left rear shock absorber leaking with its reservoir missing entirely. Part recovery began on both front and rear assemblies for supplier teardown. Starting in November 2025, Toyota ran dynamic testing where reservoir detachment was induced deliberately to study what happens at speed, which confirmed the road hazard but not the cause.

From January through April 2026, Toyota hypothesized that rock chipping and salt spray together, rather than either one alone, were driving the corrosion. During original development those two exposures had been tested independently. The supplier also disclosed that the length of the flange connecting the reservoir to the shock absorber changes how corrosion behaves when moisture gets in, and had already recommended a production change to a shorter flange. Toyota ran new bench testing that combined rock contact and salt spray across the supplier's 600, 900, and 1600 hour exposure cycles, and still could not duplicate the corrosion seen on parts pulled from the field.

The answer came from simulation and dye. In mid-April 2026, Toyota and the supplier ran CAE analysis on the weld strength of the long flange and found that the lowest two welds fail first under even pressure along the flange, matching the weld condition on field parts that had not yet detached. A dye penetration test then showed that even with no visible damage to the paint and wax, moisture can reach the untreated metal surfaces and corrode them. Toyota decided to conduct the voluntary recall on July 30, 2026. As of July 27, 2026, Toyota had identified 20 Field Technical Reports and 62 warranty claims from U.S. sources related to the condition.

This is the second Toyota campaign filed on August 6, 2026, alongside recall 26V511 covering 508,354 Camry Hybrids for a blank instrument cluster. The two land in Toyota service drives at the same time and could not be more different in shape. One is a software update on a half million cars. This one is an inspection and a physical parts replacement on 48,280 trucks, and the trucks are 2024 and 2025 models, early enough in the ownership cycle that the selling store is still the natural place for them to land. Every one of them is bay time and parts.
