Recall Date:
7/13/2026

NHTSA ID: 26V452

MFr. Campaign Number: 306

Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America

Affected Components: Rear center seat belt buckle assembly

Potential Number of Units Affected: 47,749

Which Hyundai vehicles are affected?

Two Kona variants are included, with the gas model making up nearly the entire population:

The rear center seat belt buckle assemblies in these vehicles may have been manufactured outside of specification, which could reduce seat belt performance in a crash and increase the risk of injury to occupants. The cause traces back to the component supplier, where a stamping die was not maintained properly and wore out from overuse, letting out-of-spec buckles reach production. There is no warning a driver can see or feel before it matters, which is what makes the buckle replacement worth doing promptly. Hyundai estimates about one percent of the population is affected.

What drivers need to know

The remedy is a straight replacement of the rear center seat belt buckle assembly at a Hyundai dealer, at no cost to the owner. That holds regardless of whether the vehicle is still under Hyundai's New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and Hyundai will reimburse owners who already paid out of pocket to fix the condition. Because a part is being swapped, this is a dealer visit rather than an over-the-air update.

This recall does not carry a Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory. Hyundai does advise owners to avoid using the rear center seating position until the replacement is complete. Dealers and owners are scheduled to be notified on September 11, 2026, and VINs are searchable as of July 15, 2026. Owners can check a specific VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls.

Hyundai recall background

This recall came out of the supply chain rather than the road. In early February 2026, the buckle supplier told Hyundai about a dynamic test failure on a rear center buckle built for the Kona, and Hyundai's North America Safety Office opened an investigation. Field data review turned up no owner reports of reduced buckle performance, and the condition was confirmed to be limited to Kona rear center buckles.

Through the spring, Hyundai and the supplier traced the problem to a specific production window tied to the worn stamping die, recovered field parts for testing, and confirmed failures only among parts from that window. The supplier had already tightened its die-maintenance inspection standards in January 2026, correcting the issue in production. On July 6, 2026, Hyundai's North American Safety Decision Authority chose to recall every potentially affected vehicle out of an abundance of caution. There are no confirmed crashes, fires, or injuries tied to this condition in the U.S.

For dealers, a recall with no visible symptom and no scary headline is the hardest kind to close. Owners feel no urgency because nothing seems wrong, so these campaigns stall unless someone makes contact and books the appointment. For a full recall history, check out our Quarterly Recall Report.

How BizzyCar can help

A buckle recall gives an owner no reason to act on their own. The car drives fine, the dashboard is quiet, and the letter looks like every other piece of dealer mail. That is precisely the scenario where recall completion rates sag and vehicles stay on the road unfixed. BizzyCar's Recall Outreach product finds the Kona owners in a dealer's market with this open recall and books the seat belt buckle replacement automatically over two-way SMS, meeting owners on the channel they actually answer.

For the dealership, that means a low-friction way to bring in nearly 48,000 recalled vehicles' worth of appointments across the market, capture the warranty-reimbursed labor, and build the service relationship that leads to the next visit. Schedule a demo.
