Recall Date:
6/30/2026

NHTSA ID: 26V417

MFr. Campaign Number: 26S50

Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company

Affected Components: Rear differential (pinion shaft)

Potential Number of Units Affected: 42,784

Losing motive power on the highway, or watching a parked vehicle roll when it is supposed to be in Park, are the kinds of failures that get a driver’s full attention. On June 30, 2026, Ford filed a safety recall covering 42,784 model year 2021 through 2023 Mustang Mach-E vehicles over a rear differential component that can fracture.

Which Ford vehicles are affected

One model falls under this campaign, all built with rear-wheel-drive drivetrains.

The rear differential pinion shaft on affected vehicles can fracture due to bending fatigue. If it fails, the driver may experience a loss of motive power or unintended vehicle movement when Park is requested if the parking brake is not applied. Either outcome increases the risk of a crash. Metallurgical analysis pointed to bending fatigue as the failure mode, and Ford has continued to investigate the underlying cause with its supplier.

Drivers may see a malfunction indicator light in the instrument panel before a failure, along with related diagnostic trouble codes. As of mid-June 2026, Ford was aware of 62 warranty claims tied to the condition and no reports of accidents, injuries, or fires.

What drivers need to know

This is an in-person dealer repair, not an over-the-air fix. A Ford or Lincoln dealer will repair or replace the rear differential assembly as needed, at no charge. The replacement assembly uses a differential pinion shaft built to be more robust against bending fatigue.

Ford plans to notify dealers on July 1, 2026, with interim owner letters mailing July 13 through 17, 2026. Because the more durable parts are being phased in, remedy notification letters are scheduled for December 28 through 31, 2026, which is also when affected VINs become searchable.

Owners can confirm whether a specific vehicle is included by entering the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or by contacting a Ford or Lincoln dealer.

Ford recall background

Ford opened this investigation on March 17, 2026, after a teardown of a rear differential recovered from a 2023 Mustang Mach-E in Europe identified a failed pinion shaft. A broader field analysis and laboratory testing of additional returned parts confirmed a pattern of bending fatigue failures, and Ford’s field review committee approved the action on June 23, 2026. For dealers, this is one of two Mustang-badged recalls Ford filed in the same batch, alongside a separate wiper motor campaign. Mach-E owners skew toward early technology adopters who respond well to prompt, digital communication about their vehicles.
