Recall Date: 5/28/2026
NHTSA ID: 26V346
MFr. Campaign Number: WRF-26
Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
Affected Components: Power Moonroof Sunroof Lid Assembly
Potential Number of Units Affected: 69,663
This recall covers the 2026 Subaru Forester (65,656 vehicles) and the 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid (4,007 vehicles), for a total of 69,663 vehicles. Subaru estimates that approximately 2.9% of the population carries the active defect. Affected vehicles were identified using production records — vehicles outside the recall scope were built with power moonroof assemblies in which the glass panel was properly bonded to the sliding frame.
The defect originates during manufacturing of the power moonroof assembly. In affected units, the primer — the bonding agent that holds the glass panel to the sliding frame — was not applied properly. Over time, the bonding adhesion between the glass panel and the frame can deteriorate, and the moonroof glass can become detached during normal use of the vehicle. The supplier of the affected sunroof lid assembly is Webasto Roof Systems Inc. US.
If the glass panel were to separate from the vehicle while in motion, a displaced panel becomes a road hazard — increasing the risk of a crash or injury for other road users. There is no in-vehicle warning indicator that signals the bonding has weakened, so drivers would not be alerted before a detachment occurred.
The remedy is inspection and, if necessary, replacement. For all potentially affected vehicles, Subaru dealers will inspect the power moonroof glass panel for proper adhesion and, if required, replace the glass panel assembly at no cost to the customer. Replacement assemblies are manufactured with the proper application of the primer. Subaru corrected the condition in production on March 10, 2026, so vehicles built after that date are not affected.
Subaru notified dealers on May 28, 2026. VINs became searchable on May 29, 2026, and owner notification letters are scheduled to mail by July 24, 2026 as part of a phased recall.
The investigation opened on February 26, 2026, after Subaru received a technical report that a power moonroof glass panel had become detached from a vehicle. The supplier inspected all assemblies under its control the same day and found no issues, but by March 1, 2026, the supplier's investigation indicated that some assemblies with improper bonding may have already been built and shipped. From March through April, Subaru and the supplier reviewed primer application volume logs to identify the affected scope and develop an inspection method that could be performed in the field — confirming that visible inspection of accessible bonding areas is sufficient to determine whether the glass panel is at risk of detaching. Subaru elected to conduct a voluntary safety recall on May 21, 2026, out of an abundance of caution.
Subaru is aware of three U.S. technical reports related to this condition, received between late February and late March 2026. No crashes or injuries have been reported. For a wider view of Subaru and other OEM recall activity, see BizzyCar's Q1 2026 Recall Report.
With nearly 70,000 newer Foresters and Forester Hybrids in the population — and with owner letters not arriving until late July — Subaru dealers have a clear runway to reach affected customers proactively. Because the remedy is an inspection first, with replacement only if needed, scheduling can be batched efficiently if outreach starts early.
BizzyCar Recall Outreach cross-references a dealer's customer database against open recall data to identify which vehicles are affected. From there, BizzyCar's AI agent reaches out to those owners through automated two-way SMS — scheduling appointments without requiring service advisors to work through a calling list. Dealers who move early on recall outreach consistently capture more ROs than dealers who wait for owners to self-schedule after the letter arrives.
