Lexus LX March 2026 Recall

Recall Date:
3/24/2026

NHTSA ID: 26V180

MFr. Campaign Number: 26LB03/36LA03

Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

Affected Components: Seat Frame Assembly

Potential Number of Units Affected: ~15,264

Affected Vehicles

This recall covers 15,264 units of the 2022–2024 Lexus LX produced between July 30, 2021, and July 18, 2024. Toyota estimates that approximately 30% of vehicles in this population may have the defective seat frame assembly. The issue is specific to vehicles equipped with a front passenger seat frame manufactured at a single supplier facility during a defined production window; not all Lexus LX vehicles in the production date range are affected.

The front passenger seat frame in question was manufactured by Toyota Boshoku Corporation. A mispositioned jig during the production process caused some seat frames to be built with insufficient clearance between the seat frame and the stopper. The severity of the defect depends on the specific clearance present in each vehicle, meaning a physical inspection is necessary to confirm which vehicles require a repair.

What Drivers Need to Know

The front passenger seat in affected vehicles is equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS). The OCS measures the weight of the front passenger and sends that data to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses it to determine how the passenger airbag should deploy in a crash. When the seat frame contacts the stopper due to insufficient clearance, the OCS can produce an inaccurate reading.

If the OCS misreads occupant weight, the airbag system may not deploy as designed during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger. Toyota confirmed this failure mode through vehicle testing in March 2026, finding that seat frames with the smallest observed clearances could cause the OCS to misclassify an occupant based on measured weight. Dealers will inspect the seat frame assembly and replace it if the clearance is below the required threshold. All repairs are covered at no cost under the Lexus New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between May 9 and May 23, 2026. Dealers were notified on March 24, 2026, and can begin processing appointments now.

How Toyota Identified This Issue

This recall has a notable origin: it was caught during Toyota's own final vehicle inspection process. In July 2024, a single vehicle triggered an "Airbag OFF" indicator with the passenger seat occupied during end-of-line inspection at the assembly plant. Investigators found interference between the seat frame and the stopper on that unit and traced the root cause to an incorrectly positioned jig at the Toyota Boshoku supplier facility.

From November 2024 through June 2025, Toyota conducted engineering analysis to establish the critical clearance threshold, determining that a gap below 3.8 mm creates conditions for seat frame-to-stopper contact. From July 2025 through early 2026, Toyota ran a parts recovery program to measure clearances across the suspect field population. Vehicle-level testing in March 2026 confirmed that the most extreme cases caused OCS misclassification. Toyota formally determined the safety recall obligation on March 18, 2026, and filed the Part 573 report on March 24, 2026.
