The 2017-2020 Genesis G80 vehicles were produced between March 17, 2016 and November 7, 2019. The 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis vehicles were produced between February 21, 2014 and February 24, 2016. All were assembled by Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea for sale in the U.S. Hyundai estimates that about 1% of the vehicles involved have the defect.
What Is the Problem?
The front seat slider and height adjustment control switch on non-memory power seats can become dislodged or damaged when it is hit by an external force. When that happens, the switch can stay engaged and the seat adjustment motor can run continuously, even after the occupant leaves the vehicle. Prolonged operation can cause the motor to overheat and increases the risk of a fire, whether the vehicle is being driven or is parked.
Hyundai identifies two warning signs owners may notice: a burning odor from the seat and seat control switches that no longer work.
How the Issue Was Found
Hyundai first learned of a power seat condition on December 31, 2021, through a Speak Up For Safety report on a 2018 Genesis G80. A second potential case followed in August 2022. Hyundai recovered the seat assembly from that vehicle in late 2023, and analysis confirmed the switch damage was caused by an external impact. Through 2024 and 2025, Hyundai kept monitoring field reports, which stayed low and showed no increase.
On July 2, 2026, Hyundai received additional information from the Korean market about power seat switch performance and thermal event allegations. After reviewing the findings, Hyundai's North America Safety Office convened its safety decision authority and decided on October 1, 2026 to conduct a safety recall. Hyundai is aware of two alleged fire incidents in the U.S. and no crashes or injuries related to this condition.
The Remedy
Hyundai is still developing the remedy. Until the repair is available, Hyundai recommends that owners park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures. Once the remedy is ready, owners will be notified by mail with instructions to bring their vehicle to a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer. The repair will be free of charge, whether or not the vehicle is still under warranty, and Hyundai will reimburse owners for out-of-pocket expenses related to obtaining a remedy under its reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
Dealer and owner notifications are scheduled for December 6, 2026, as a phased recall. Hyundai noted that VINs would be searchable beginning October 13, 2026.
What This Means for Dealerships
This recall covers older vehicles that have likely changed hands, and a parts remedy has not been announced yet. That makes proactive communication important. Owners who hear from a dealership now about the park-outside guidance, and learn that a free repair is coming, are far more likely to come back to that store when the remedy arrives. Dealerships should identify affected Genesis and Genesis G80 vehicles in their customer and service history so they are ready to reach out.
