VW built the population from assembly records, HV battery traceability, supplier production records, and available charging data. Vehicles outside it either carry cells produced outside the suspect range or have recent, complete data showing charging below the defined threshold.

In certain batteries, specific charging profiles combined with a state of charge above 80% may trigger thermal propagation inside the battery. If that happens, it may result in a vehicle fire.

What drivers need to know

There is no final repair yet. Until the remedy is performed, VW advises owners to limit charging to 80%. Every affected owner will receive a warning sticker to place in the vehicle as a reminder not to charge the HV battery above 80% state of charge. Depending on the configuration and connectivity, some vehicles may be configured to limit the maximum state of charge to 80% automatically.

VW will notify dealers on or about October 6, 2026, and VINs become searchable that day. Owner notifications are expected on or before November 27, 2026. VW is not offering a reimbursement plan because these vehicles are within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period. No Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory has been issued.

Volkswagen recall background

This campaign covers vehicles that were not included in VW's previous HV battery recalls. On June 17, 2026, preliminary field data pointed to a possible link between specific isolation-resistance values and DC-charging ratios, and the Product Safety Committee ordered a field study of complete battery systems.

The committee reviewed the study results on September 21, 2026. It asked the cell supplier for more detail on production measures and a potential clean date, and assigned analysis of an interim 80% state of charge limit. On September 23, 2026, it decided to conduct a voluntary recall, even with the root cause still open. VW identified 22 claims in the U.S. between January 18, 2024, and August 7, 2026.

How BizzyCar can help

An ID.4 owner today has a sticker coming, an 80% charging limit to follow, and no repair date. That is a lot to ask of a customer without a clear point of contact. The dealer who reaches out first becomes that contact.

BizzyCar Recall Outreach finds vehicles with open recalls and schedules service automatically through two-way SMS. Dealers who know which ID.4s are affected before the remedy lands are ready to book them the day it does. Book a demo here.
