Model Model Years Units Potentially Involved

Mitsubishi Outlander

2025-2026

65,940

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

2026

1,206

The population breaks down to 65,940 Outlander and 1,206 Outlander PHEV units, built between December 2024 and July 2026 with a second-generation A-IVI infotainment unit supplied by Bosch. Mitsubishi estimates the defect affects about 1 percent of the population, and it identified the vehicles in scope through manufacturing records tied to that specific hardware and software combination.

The defect is a software problem, not a hardware failure. Improper programming in the A-IVI system can cause the screen to fail to boot, freeze, restart on its own, go black, or scroll on its own. None of those symptoms are dangerous by themselves, but if any of them happen the moment a driver shifts into reverse, the rearview camera image disappears along with everything else on the screen. That specific failure mode is what puts the vehicle out of compliance with FMVSS 111, the federal standard covering rear visibility.

What drivers need to know

The fix is a software reprogram, performed free of charge at a Mitsubishi dealership. There is no Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory attached to this campaign, so owners can continue driving normally until their appointment. Dealers are being notified on September 9, 2026, and owner notifications begin September 24, 2026.

Mitsubishi is also offering reimbursement to any owner who already paid out of pocket to address the condition before the recall was announced, going back as far as ten years. Owners seeking that reimbursement submit their original repair order and proof of payment to Mitsubishi's Customer Relations Department. Any owner can check a specific VIN now at NHTSA.gov/recalls.

Mitsubishi recall background

This is a defect that took ten months to pin down, largely because it wouldn't repeat on command. The first report came from Canada in October 2025, describing a touchscreen that intermittently stopped responding. A second wave of Canadian reports followed in November, this time describing screen freezing. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation spent from December 2025 through May 2026 analyzing a returned unit and its system logs, and only then did the investigation zero in on a software initialization problem inside the A-IVI system rather than a hardware fault.

In the United States specifically, Mitsubishi and its North American arm have logged 39 warranty claims and one field report describing similar symptoms since June 2025, and the companies are not aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the condition. Mitsubishi made its noncompliance determination on August 18, 2026, and vehicles built after July 28, 2026 already carry the corrected software from the factory.

How BizzyCar can help

A rearview camera that only disappears during an intermittent software glitch is easy for an owner to shrug off, especially if it has never happened to them. That's exactly the population where a mailed notice underperforms. BizzyCar's Recall Outreach product finds every Outlander and Outlander PHEV in a dealer's database with this open campaign and reaches those owners through two-way SMS, the channel people actually respond to, to get the software update scheduled.

A five-minute reprogram is a low-friction visit for the service drive, and every one of those visits is an opening to check maintenance intervals the vehicle may be due for.
