All of these vehicles were built with an engine starter of a certain production configuration. Over time, and after a large number of starting attempts, an internal component can wear and allow a buildup of metallic material inside the starter. As that material accumulates, the starter may stop working properly, which in some cases leaves the engine unable to start. In an extreme case, the condition can produce a thermal event or fire when starting the engine or while the engine is running. BMW lists the estimated share of vehicles that actually carry the defect at 0.1 percent, and notes the true figure is lower still, held at 0.1 only because the reporting portal will not accept a smaller number.

The Toyota Supra is built alongside the BMW Z4 and uses shared components, which is why a Toyota model appears on a BMW campaign. Owners of those Supra vehicles are covered under the same remedy and will be served through Toyota dealers.

What drivers need to know

The fix is a full replacement. Dealers will install a redesigned engine starter that is not subject to the wear condition, and the repair is performed at no charge to the owner. Because the work is mechanical, it requires a visit to an authorized BMW or Toyota dealer rather than a remote update.

This recall does not carry a Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory. Owners who already paid to replace a starter before the recall may qualify for reimbursement under BMW Group's or Toyota's plan. BMW planned to notify dealers on July 8, 2026, with owner letters going out on August 28, 2026. Owners can confirm whether a specific vehicle is included by entering the VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls once the campaign is searchable, or by contacting a local dealer.

BMW recall background

This action is an extension of earlier work, not a standalone event. In January 2026, BMW filed recall 26V-056 covering starters from the same family. After that campaign, BMW kept monitoring the field and continued engineering reviews on the remaining four-cylinder vehicles that had not yet been recalled, including cars built with starters from a second production facility.

A parts collection and teardown effort began in February 2026, pulling starters even from vehicles with no complaints on record. Around the same time, a small set of field incidents surfaced. A non-US case in February 2026 involved a 2023 4 Series Convertible, a non-US case in March 2026 involved a 2023 X3, and a US case from November 2025 involved a 2021 X3. Teardown analysis between March and June pointed to the same root cause behind 26V-056, and BMW decided to proceed with this voluntary recall on July 1, 2026. BMW reports no accidents or injuries tied to the condition, and Toyota reports no related field reports or warranty claims on the Supra.

The pattern is worth noting for service departments. When a recall is broadened in stages, the vehicles added later are the ones that slipped past the first campaign. Closing them out depends on reaching every affected owner, not most of them. For an in-depth look at recall trends, check out our Quarterly Recall Report.

How BizzyCar can help

A recall this size on high-volume models like the X3 and 3 Series is real service-drive volume, but only for the dealers who actually get those owners scheduled. A starter that still works today gives the owner no reason to act on a mailed letter, so the vehicle keeps driving until the day it does not start, often somewhere inconvenient. BizzyCar's Recall Outreach product identifies vehicles in a dealer's market with open recalls and books the appointment automatically through two-way SMS, meeting owners on the channel they actually answer.

That turns an open campaign into scheduled shop hours and puts your store in front of BMW and Toyota owners before the no-start happens. Every recall visit also opens the door to the maintenance and declined-service work that comes with it. Book a demo.
