The roof rail covers on these vehicles can loosen over time, developing a visible gap, a rattle, or detaching from the vehicle entirely while it is in motion. The covers were secured in one of two ways, depending on trim and repair history, and both paths have shown degraded retention. On vehicles previously repaired with a two-part epoxy adhesive, the process was sensitive to how each technician applied it, so some retention clips or adhesive conditions were not right the first time. On vehicles with plated covers, age, repeated heat cycles, and solar loading gradually worked the retention clips loose. Ford estimates roughly one percent of the population carries the defect.

Drivers usually get a warning before a cover comes off. Increased wind noise, squeaks, and rattles tend to show up first, followed by a visible gap or misalignment between the roof rail cover and the roofline.

What drivers need to know

This is a repair handled at a Ford or Lincoln dealer at no charge to the owner. The dealer inspects the roof rail covers for the presence of the additional push-pin fasteners. If those push pins are already there, no further work is needed. If they are not, the dealer replaces any broken clips or damaged covers and secures the covers with four plastic push pins per side. The fix is mechanical, so it requires a dealer visit rather than an over-the-air update.

This recall does not carry a Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory. Ford plans to notify dealers on July 16, 2026, with VINs searchable the same day. Interim owner letters are scheduled to be mailed August 24 through 28, 2026, and remedy letters go out September 21 through 25, 2026. Owners can confirm whether a specific Explorer is included by entering their VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls or by calling Ford's recall line at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford recall background

This action is the latest chapter in a story that started years ago. In November 2020, Ford opened customer satisfaction program 20N11, a one-time extended-warranty repair for loose or detaching roof rail covers on 2016-2019 Explorers, using the epoxy adhesive method. In April 2021, Ford followed with safety recall 21V316, which moved painted covers to a stronger four-push-pin mechanical fix after field data showed a rising rate of detachment.

Plated covers were left out of that 2021 recall because their data looked better at the time. The picture changed this spring. In March 2026, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation flagged 46 owner questionnaires citing looseness or detachment, including on vehicles already repaired under both earlier programs. Ford's review through the spring found that plated covers in original condition, and covers repaired with epoxy, kept degrading, while covers fixed with push pins held up as intended. Ford's Field Review Committee approved this recall on July 7, 2026. Ford reports no injuries and one alleged accident tied to a detachment on an epoxy-repaired vehicle.

The through-line matters for dealers. Each prior program reached only part of the affected fleet, and the vehicles that slipped through are exactly the ones back on the recall list now. Closing a recall completely depends on reaching every owner, not just most of them. For a full picture of Ford recalls, check out our Quarterly Recall Report.

How BizzyCar can help

A 288,314-unit recall on a vehicle as common as the Explorer is a service-drive opportunity, but only for the dealers who actually reach those owners. Mailed letters land in a stack with everything else, and the vehicles most likely to still carry the defect are the ones whose owners ignored the last two rounds of notices. BizzyCar's Recall Outreach product identifies vehicles in a dealer's market with open recalls and books the service appointment automatically through two-way SMS, so the conversation happens where owners actually respond.

That turns a recall notice into scheduled shop hours and puts your dealership in front of Explorer owners before they drift to someone else. Recall work also opens the door to the maintenance and declining service revenue that comes with every visit. Book a demo.
