This recall covers 2018 Ford F-150 vehicles produced between February 13, 2017, and July 11, 2018. The recall affects 10,742 F-150 vehicles, with an estimated defect rate of 100%. According to Ford's records, affected vehicles may not have correctly received the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software remedy for safety recall 17S35/17V-669, despite being recorded as completed.
The cause of this defect is that the PCM calibration may not properly process the intended gear selection when a column-mounted shift lever is moved rapidly from Park to Drive. This vulnerability exists when a column shifter cable is installed at one end of its full adjustment. Rapid movement, which occurs in approximately 30 milliseconds, can overshoot the shift cable position. This overshoot can cause the PCM calibration to command a momentary, inaccurate gear selection into either Neutral or Reverse based on the last PRNDL position recognized by the PCM.
What drivers need to know
Because the correct software update may not be installed, the underlying condition specified in the previous safety recall still exists on 3.3L engines and 6-speed transmissions with a column-mounted shift lever. The rapid movement can cause a loss of PRNDL gear indication in the instrument cluster and momentary engagement of Reverse operation, which lasts less than 1 second, before achieving the forward drive function. This could result in unintended vehicle movement, or an operator could alternatively experience momentary Neutral operation. Ford stated that this unintended vehicle movement may increase the risk of an accident or injury. There are no warnings before this occurs
Ford recall background
The remedy is a software update provided free of charge. Owners will be notified by mail to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to update the PCM software. Afterwards, the software part numbers will be validated using the Software Validation Form in the Professional Technician System before closing the field service action. Owners who paid for remedies before notification may be eligible for reimbursement.
Notifications to dealers are expected to occur between July 6, 2026, and July 8, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between July 6, 2026, and July 10, 2026. VINs will be searchable starting July 6, 2026. This issue was identified during a comprehensive audit of software-related field service actions dating back to 2017, which revealed implementation discrepancies during the transition between the legacy IDS field service tool and the new FDRS service tool. Ford's Field Review Committee approved a field action on June 2, 2026, and Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.
